Grand Theft Auto III
The genre-defining 3D open-world game that redefined what video games could be.
Grand Theft Auto III is an open-world action-adventure game developed by DMA Design (later known as Rockstar North) and published by Rockstar Games. Released in October 2001 for PlayStation 2, it was the first Grand Theft Auto game presented in full 3D with a third-person perspective. Set in Liberty City, it followed the story of Claude — a silent protagonist betrayed and left for dead — navigating the city's criminal underworld. The game sold 6 million copies in its first year and over 15 million in total, became the best-selling game of 2001, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential video games ever made.
